The Philadelphia Rail Park

I’d like to consider myself a person in the know especially when it comes to goings on in Philadelphia. Somehow, the fact that Philly was getting its own rail park was NOT on my radar until maybe 4 months ago but when I DID learn about this new green space I was counting the days until the park would be open to the public. Today was that day, and it couldn’t have been a more beautiful day to unveil Phase 1 of the Philadelphia Rail Park. IMG_1362 Once complete, the rail park trail will be over 3 miles long and will pass through 10 Philly neighborhoods. Phase 1 is located in the Chinatown/Callowhill section of the city and surprisingly, this neighborhood was lacking a park or substantial green space but all of that changed today. At the opening ceremony there was a mixture of people from different neighborhoods, ages and backgrounds. I think this is very indicative of what the vision of this space was meant to be and turning that vision into reality has been long in the making. What’s interesting is that the idea for the rail park was brewing long before the High Line in the Chelsea neighborhood of New York came to fruition. (It’s still awesome none the less) There were several speakers on hand to commemorate the park’s grand opening including Mayor Jim Kenney, and Executive Director Kevin Dow.

It has truly taken a VILLAGE to bring the park to life with contributions from city and state officials, parks and recreation, benefactors and residents. There is no word yet on when the construction of Phase II will begin, but this is a promising start. This project is a great look for Philadelphia and creates an innovative space where people can come to connect, and to play and I believe it will encourage people to venture outside of their own “backyards.”

Children’s Scholarship Fund Philadelphia

Mission Statementto provide children from low-income Philadelphia families with financial access to quality, safe, K-8th grade, tuition-based schools, thereby increasing their long-term economic and social success. CSFP grants need-based scholarships to children from low-income Philadelphia families, all of which are awarded by random lottery. CSFP currently serves about 5,200 children enrolled at over 170 private and parochial schools.

I first learned about Children’s Scholarship Fund last year when I was invited to their annual Crystal Ball Gala. Granted, I have no children of my own so scholarships weren’t on my radar but none the less I was surprised that I hadn’t heard of the organization prior to that night.IMG_3077 When I was a child, my mother saw to it that I receive a private school education but it wasn’t easy and she had to FIGHT to learn about scholarships (pre-internet) because without those scholarships I wouldn’t have been able to attend. I understand first hand how important these scholarships are. My first volunteer experience with CSFP was participating in “Lottery Day” where volunteers called parents to let them know their children received a scholarship. I loved it. There is nothing better than giving people GOOD news. The parents were so happy and more than one told me that they stumbled across the scholarship fund by accident. So imagine all of the families who don’t know that this fantastic organization exists! It was there that I met Christanne Clymer who is the Senior Development Manager at CSFP. Her enthusiasm and spirit is infectious. She invited me to the next volunteer effort which consisted of assisting the staff with canvassing the Brewerytown neighborhood (my hood) to help spread the word by handing out flyers and brochures to residents and store owners. Most recently, I was invited to participate in Career Day at Gesu School in North Philadelphia, which you can read more about here. I hope to continue helping CSFP in any way I can and if you are interested in learning more about the organization and how you can help please go to https://www.csfphiladelphia.org. Spread the word!

Red Table Talk

Jun 1, 2018 / 0 Comments

In an age where everyone is in competition for likes, followers and viewers, our attention span is decreasing by the day. There is a lot of noise out there on the inner webz and most times it is stuff I don’t want to read OR see so it’s refreshing to come across something I can actually relate to.  On Jada Pinkett-Smith’s show, “Red Table Talk”, (exclusively on Facebook) 3 generations of women which consist of Jada, her daughter Willow, and Jada’s mother Adrienne, have very intimate conversations about numerous topics such as body image, self-preservation and personal growth. The segments are usually less than 20 minutes long but a lot is covered in that time and the discussions are so good that it leaves you wanting more. I wouldn’t say that the show is necessarily catered to black women but naturally with 3 black women at the table, there are some experiences that they talk about that is exclusively part of the black experience. These are conversations that if women aren’t currently having with their inner circle, they should. These are conversations WORTH sharing because so many times as women we keep so much inside as we are constantly trying to be everything to everybody. Sometimes you have to check yourself and a very good example of that is the conversation Jada had with actress, Gabrielle Union. The two women had been on the outs for about 17 years, neither one not really even knowing WHY there was tension. Granted, they were never friends but there was definitely some unspoken animosity. Both women were honest about the space they were in at that time vs. the space they are in today. Each had to check themselves and identify the insecurities which caused them both to be so petty for so long. This show is ultimately about HEALING and we ALL can use that. I look forward to hearing more from Miss Jada! Has anyone out there checked out the show? What are your thoughts? Sound off!
